About Woodkirk High SchoolDear Parents, Carers and Governors,
We have reorganised the teaching staff responsibilities, changed the composition of the Senior Leadership Team, commissioned a new administration block to be built, moved significantly closer to the redesigning of the sports fields, formed a new extended schools cluster group with four of our feeder primary schools, begun refurbishing the site supervisors bungalow for use as an inclusion unit, ordered retractable tiered seating for the main hall and even found the funds for the older part of the school to be painted (£25,000!) The school lunches have improved immeasurably leading to a better, more enjoyable and healthier choice for the students and for this I would like to thank Mr Chris Hulme and his team who have more exciting plans for September. We have taken the decision to modify the school uniform so that each year group will have a stronger identity and to further enhance the already excellent appearance of Woodkirk's students. Woodkirk High Specialist Science School aims to provide a safe, happy and ordered environment where all children have the maximum opportunities to fully develop their individual skills and abilities. We try to bring about learning in all its various forms for all children, irrespective of ability and background. There are 1760+ students on roll including 240+ sixth formers and a staff of 113 teachers, plus 45 ancillary staff. Woodkirk is set in its own very extensive grounds and it has the staffing, facilities and courses available to educate students to university entrance level. Woodkirk aims to create a balance between the various academic, intellectual, spiritual, cultural, social, community, musical, athletic and career demands on young people. We have splendid traditions in music, performing arts, drama, theatre, games, physical education and community involvement. Students are encouraged to be involved in all aspects of school life; the range of curricular and extra-curricular opportunities offers a wide variety of choice. The school follows the National Curriculum and students are given full support to excel; the future belongs to young people who are well educated and trained to offer the skills and abilities demanded by society. In September 2003 the school became a new Specialist Science School and as a result we provide enhanced facilities and resources in mathematics and science. As a result of this designation there will also be more opportunities for students to use ICT as a learning tool in all areas of the curriculum.
The ladder to the universities and colleges of higher and further education is there for the 130+ students annually who wish to extend their education. Woodkirk provides good career prospects, with most leavers finding employment, further training or joining an approved scheme. Special Needs children are well catered for. The school is outward looking within the community, the nation and Europe in particular. Students are involved in community work and work placement schemes. The many trips, visits, outings, displays and fieldwork excursions we organise form an important part of school life. There have been successful pupil excursions and visits to France, Germany, Netherlands, Ireland and the USA. Links are also being forged with schools in Australia, China, the Czech Republic and the Lebanon to explore the impact of science and technology on the lives of students.
Woodkirk has a well qualified, experienced and enthusiastic staff who are supported by an excellent Governing Body and generous parent involvement. The school is proud to reflect traditional values and standards but also to employ the best of modern practice and teaching in all areas. Our popularity and public standing continues to grow annually as pupil achievement continues to improve at all levels. Finally, our existing parents welcome the emphasis on hard work, examination success, homework, good standards of behaviour and full participation in the life of a caring, yet vigorous and challenging school. Woodkirk is recognised in the community for providing a happy, stable, safe and secure environment. The pastoral system is based on a child's form tutor working closely with the Year Tutor, Assistant Year Tutor, Head of School, Pastoral Deputy Headteacher and parents. We have an excellent reputation for being a well organised and disciplined community based on care and concern for the well being and welfare of all the students.
There is a very strong team tradition and sense of identity in the school. Students wear school uniform/dress, which undoubtedly creates a sense of unity of spirit and there are no apparent distinctions of wealth or background between them. We believe personal appearance affects standards of behaviour and academic performance and, therefore, insist that students display first class personal standards. Parents welcome this clear, distinctive ethos and support school policy based on a firm but kindly insistence on all children aiming for the highest levels of achievement that are within their capabilities. The quality of the school is reflected in excellent school attendance figures and participation in 50+ extra-curricular activities featuring sport, games and music in particular.
