Sixth Form at WoodkirkThe Sixth Form (Years 12 and 13) is a very well established and rapidly expanding community of 240+ students within the school. The majority of students come directly from our Year 11 but we also attract students from other local schools. The school has the staffing, facilities and resources to provide a large number of excellent courses. Students are advised to take programmes of study that will aid their personal development and enable them to proceed to Higher or Further Education or take up suitable careers.
Nearly 50% of Year 11 students return to join the school Sixth Form and a further 25% go into Further Education on leaving school. Over 90% of Sixth Form students following two year courses move on to universities including Oxford and Cambridge, while those following one year courses have enhanced employment or Further Education opportunities. Education Leeds has been part of the Excellence in Cities programme since 1999. At Woodkirk we ensure that our very able and talented students are given the opportunity to develop their skills, both inside and outside the classroom. Emphasis is placed on individual learning styles and higher order thinking skills. Within Excellence in Cities we are also involved in the national Aim higher programme, which aims to increase the number of students who are capable of proceding to Further and Higher Education. Many of our students benefit from additional mentoring and monitoring.
Pastoral Care, Careers and Higher EducationThe Sixth Form has a first class system of Pastoral Care based on an extensive structure of Head of School, Year Tutors and Form Tutors. Regular monitoring, recording, reporting and meetings with parents and students are all important factors in ensuring a stable, secure environment. A well resourced and informed support service allows all students to prepare for Higher Education and careers with confidence. This involves staff expertise and a computer based information service throughout the two years. The annual Awards Evening programme lists all the degree courses and wide range of degree subjects which students select. This is a clear indication of the broad-based nature of Woodkirk's courses. Life in the Sixth FormSixth Form students are expected to take responsibility for common room and study areas. The Sixth Form plays an important part in school life. The students are seen as leaders within the total school community. The high standard of work and activity at this level has a strong influence on the academic atmosphere throughout the school. Parents and students should contact the Headteacher or Head of Sixth Form by telephone or in writing at any time if they wish to receive any further information. Appointments can be made to look round the facilities and talk to staff and students. Timetables are individualised to suit personal requirements. |
