Dear Parents/Carers                                                                             

YEAR 11 GCSE EXAMINATIONS 2010

The following arrangements have been made to help pupils revise and prepare thoroughly for the GCSE examinations which take place before the half term break.

In the weeks beginning the 3rd, 10th, 17th May and 24th May pupils will follow a revised timetable, a copy of which is enclosed with this letter. There as 3 different types of sessions on the timetable;

1. GCSE examinations
2. Extra examination preparation session led by subject teachers
3. Normal lessons

Exams from the 3rd May -14th May.

Exams from the 17th May-28th May.

This combination of revision and lesson time will allow pupils the best opportunity to prepare for the GCSE examinations. It is vital that students have the correct revision material with them each day and the correct equipment for examinations. During art lessons in this period students will be able to revise for their forthcoming examinations as all their Art coursework will have been completed. Once a student has completed all their examinations in a particular subject they will be able to revise for other examinations during that lesson time.

Study leave begins on Friday 28th May, however, after this date all pupils taking BTEC and OCR courses MUST still continue to attend lessons as normal, where they do not clash with examinations, until their coursework has been completed to the required standard. All pupils are also encouraged to attend any revision session that have been organised by their subject teachers.

These examinations are very important and I would like to stress how vital it is that your son/daughter has revised thoroughly for them. You can help them by ensuring that they have revision guides/workbooks and by guiding them to suitable revision sites on the internet for example http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/gcsebitesize.

Woodkirk High Specialist Science School is considering becoming a Foundation School within a shared Trust. This letter and the accompanying consultation document and questionnaire are to explain our ideas and proposals and to ask for your views on the plan.

Trust schools are a new kind of school – part of the local authority system, but supported by a charitable Trust which will appoint some of the governors. The partner organisations that want to work closely with the schools in the trust are Barnado’s, Leeds Metropolitan University and West Yorkshire Police.

The governing bodies of the schools see this as a real chance to enhance educational provision. The shared trust will create an environment which will support the learning needs of all our children and improve children‘s services.   

• Schools and partners will work together to strengthen academic, practical and vocational opportunities for all our pupils.
• Through sharing resources, economies of scale and freedom from LEA restrictions, schools will benefit from improved services at lower cost and will have more money to spend on resources for the children.
• As a group of partners working together for the benefit of the whole community the new shared Trust would provide stability and sustainability well into the future. 

We would not be considering this change if it did not fit in with our current work and our vision for Woodkirk as a 21^st Century School

Please let us know what you think about the proposal.  We hope you will be able to:

- send back our consultation questionnaire or send comments to us at the school

- come to an open meeting at the school on Wednesday, 28^th April 2010 at 6pm to discuss the proposals with the governors and the head teacher. 

The closing date for the receipt of comments is 17^th of May 2010, following which the governors will review the comments and decide whether to go ahead.
