English at WoodkirkIntroduction
English in year 7 is taught as a mixed ability class with pupils having a lesson as a form. After their first year the pupils are put into sets acording to their ability with set 1 being the highest. This system is kept all the way through to year 11 however there are plenty of chances for pupils to move up or down. Darren Shan VisitsWoodkirk High Specialist Science School hosted a major literary event on Monday 22nd May when the incredibly successful horror author Darren Shan visited the school. So far, Darren has written 15 books which have sold over 13 million copies worldwide and the screen rights to his books have been bought for a "seven figure sum" by Universal Pictures. Darren received a very warm welcome from over 90 students that took part in the event, including a group from Churwell Primary School. Darren had the audience literally on the edge of their seats as he read an extract from the first book in his Demonata series, "Lord Loss." Darren's stories are so popular with teenagers, especially boys; they queued for over an hour to have their copies of the books signed. Darren was invited by the school to discuss his writing, including his new book "Slawter", which is currently being promoted in bookshops in the UK. Some students at the school had previously entered a competition to win Darren Shan merchandise; Jordan Brumwell (13) was one noteworthy winner, who has read every book written by Darren. Another student, 14 year old Simon Kinnear, told us his favourite moments in the event: "I've read all of his books. It was brilliant to hear him talk, sign books and be able to ask him questions. It was really interesting to find out how he makes his writing so gorily fantastic... he signed every one of my books. It was a day I'll never forget". English in the Sixth Form
