Music at Woodkirk

Woodkirk is particularly proud of its excellent musical tradition. Apart from the KS3 Music course undertaken from Years 7 to 9, students have the opportunity to study GCSE and Music/Music Technology AS/A-level courses.

Visiting instrumental teachers provide specialist tuition for 600+ hours annually in: strings (violin, viola, cello); woodwind (piccolo, flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, bassoon); brass (cornet, trumpet, tenor horn, French horn, euphonium, trombone, tuba); percussion (drum kit, timpani, xylophone) and voice. A nominal charge is made for some lessons.

Woodkirk provides its own bands and orchestras for annual concerts, Awards Evening and musical productions; there are ample opportunities for ensemble and individual performance.
Both the Swing Band and Wind Band regularly perform both in this country and abroad; recent trips have included visits to both France, Italy, Ireland and Austria.

The school choirs rehearse regularly and there are daily practices for the various musical groups. The successful Upper School Choir reached the final for the Music for Youth 2003 competition in London. The Music Department has recently acquired a new 24 track-recording studio.

Students are encouraged to participate in any one of the many ensembles on offer and are also encouraged to enter for the Associated Board examinations when applicable.

TARGETS 2003 - 2006

1. Expand 8 track recording facility into 24 track recording studio
2. Develop strong links with primary schools
3. Develop KS3 & KS4 SoW using ICT (software and hardware)
